Chaddesley Wood

Highlight • Forest

This woodland is believed to have been around since the end of the Ice Age, around 6-10,000 years ago! Evidence of this long history is seen in the presence of ancient woodland species, including yellow archangel, herb paris, and dog’s mercury, as well as trees like small-leaved lime and wild service trees

Once the Roman settlement of Salinae, an important village at the junction of several roads, today Droitwich Spa and its surroundings are a treat for walkers.

Thanks to the massive deposits of salt in the region, the town has always been involved in the salt trade and became very prosperous as a spa town during the 19th century, thanks in part to the efforts of industrialist John Corbett.

Two canals pass through the town, the Droitwich Canal and the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, both important trade arteries in its heyday. The Droitwich Canal runs through Vines Park, the start/end point for the Wychavon Way, a medium-distance trail through Worcestershire. The park is a good place to learn more about the brine industry.

Quiet countryside church, made of sandstone with a wooden spire. Sitting in the churchyard makes a peaceful stopping place going from/to Droitwich on the NCN 45.

Turn off at this point to go down a short lane to the church entrance.
