Rutland Works was a Marble-working mill in the Georgian and early Victorian era, and was then taken over and used as a saw mill.
The weir and mill race (still in existence), the mill, a house, a stable, and 3 workshops were in use by c.1847. The stone cutting machinery was removed in 1996.

Bakewell

Highlight • River

Bakewell is a pretty market town in the heart of the Peak District. While the town is perhaps most famous for its unique pudding, Bakewell has plenty to offer; traditional tea rooms, quirky eateries, fine restaurants, historic buildings, a weekly market, the charming River Wye and plenty of spellbinding countryside to explore.

The Bakewell Pudding – not to be confused with the Bakewell Tart, with a cherry on top – consists of a flaky pastry base with a layer of sieved jam and topped with a filling made of egg and almond paste. While the origins of the pudding are not clear, it’s believed to have been made by accident in 1860 by a lady called Mrs Greaves, who was the landlady of the White Horse Inn. The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop lays claim to the 'original' pudding, which it has created using a secret recipe since 1889.

If you are visiting Bakewell with somebody special, be sure to write your initials, names, or message on a padlock, lock it to the bridge and throw the key into the River Wye as a gesture of your love. Lots of lovers have already and it is getting to be quite a tradition.
