Berlinde Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

This recently restored large chapel dates from the 17th century. It probably replaced an older tree chapel on a lime tree, which explains the name 'berre linde' or single lime tree.

Until the 1960s, the pilgrimage to the chapel was the highlight of popular devotion for local residents. The chapel is freely accessible during the day. There is a wishing tree at the chapel that was placed there during the corona period.

As a cyclist, you ride straight into the town hall.
The Scheldt pedestrian and cyclist bridge provides an elegant, modern crossing between the towpath and the center of Wetteren. The wide ramps eliminate the need for the old footbridge and stairs, giving the bridge a flowing, accessible line. From the highest point, you have an unobstructed view of the Scheldt, the dikes, and the green river plain.

View of the Old Scheldt Meander

Highlight • Viewpoint

Here you have a nice view of the old Scheldt meander. Formerly filled in, but restored in recent years. It is wonderful to see how this area develops after the Sigma works.

Bareldonk Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

An impressive chapel on a sand hill, known as the Kapelleberg. In 1935 a Calvary with life-size statues was erected in the forest behind the chapel. In the forest there is also a circle with seven chapels and even an altar.

The chapel was built in the 14th century and rebuilt in 1774 in the Rococo style. The facade was adapted and a new bell tower was placed. The exterior of the chapel was restored in 2003, the interior in 2007.

The chapel is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be visited free of charge through the side door. The retired pastor who lives on the Donklaan keeps an eye on things.

Peat Cutter Statue at Donkmeer

Highlight • Monument

This statue of a peat cutter represents a profession from pre-modern times. In the 17th century, the demand for peat rose, which made the Donkmeer more important. This lake turned out to be one big peat pit. The work as a peat cutter was very intensive. Day in, day out, one had to do heavy manual labor for a meager wage. The bosses, on the other hand, did get rich from the peat that they sold for a lot of money. In contrast to the workers who lived in huts around the lake, the bosses could afford mansions. At that time, there was still no talk of good working conditions and quality work.

Very touristy and busy. You're better off in Berlarebroek, on the other side of the road...
