Calcinara Stream

Highlight • River

Calcinara is the largest tributary of the Anapo and owes its name to its calcareous water.
Calcinara originates on the lower slopes of Pantalica, in the gorges of the Iblei Mountains. It is fed by underground springs and the Sperone torrent flows into it on the right side; As the Calcinara flows into the Anapo, it has contributed significantly to the formation of a truly remarkable Mediterranean scrub, the center of which is the deep quarry excavated by it and for this reason known as the "Calcinara Quarry".

Pantalica Necropolis

Highlight • Historical Site

Pantalica is one of the most impressive, but at the same time the most difficult to reach, Unesco World Heritage Sites in Sicily. Pantalica is a prehistoric archaeological zone. More precisely, the tomb dates from the late Bronze Age (from the 13th to the 8th century BC) and was one of the most important settlements of the Siculi. Pantalica is famous for the thousands of tombs carved into the steep cliffs of the Anapo Gorge. Apart from the necropolis, the area is also worth a visit because of the beautiful nature reserve. In fact, Pantalica is located in the Anapo Gorge Natural Reserve, a paradise for trekking fans thanks to the many panoramic trails.

10km at 34°C was strenuous, but not difficult. We (53 and 57) were in good shape. 4.5 liters of water. We took a dip at the end. The prohibition signs at the beginning, like everything in Italy, are seen more as recommendations for action ;-). It was a nice feeling to enter our personal details at the beginning, as well …

The World Heritage Site of Patallica was today's destination.
Necropolis with countless rock tombs in beautiful nature that reminded me a lot of the Ardèche...

A very beautiful tour. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of fluids! Sunscreen also doesn't hurt 🙃.

A very beautiful tour, but requires some stamina. Along the way, there are small paradises for swimming.

Very beautiful hike in the valley of an old railway line, along the river, with tunnels, beautiful little bathing pools and burial caves from various centuries before Christ.

Sensational hike to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pantalica. It has over 5,000 chamber tombs, dating from the late Sicilian Bronze Age and early Iron Age. The necropolis belonged to the settlement of Pantalica and gave its name to the Pantalica (Northern) culture.
