Galleria Borgo

Highlight • Structure

Borgo Gallery - cycle-pedestrian path.
A place full of charm and history, very useful for quickly and safely passing from the climb of "Strada Prima Gualdaria" to Borgo Maggiore near the cable car (or vice versa obviously).
----
Borgo and Montale galleries
1928 - 1932

"The San Marino-Rimini international railway, built entirely at the expense of the Italian fascist administration between 1928 and 1932 following agreements regarding radio broadcasts and transport, saw the use of over 1000 workers for its construction.
The 32 kilometers of the route were soon completed with an average progress of 25 meters per day. The 17 tunnels are all located in San Marino territory.
The narrow gauge electric railway, to adapt to the steep terrain, was inaugurated on 12 June 1932. It ran on a single uphill and downhill line so it was necessary to build interchange stations.
In addition to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd class cars, there was a saloon car for heads of state and illustrious guests.
Despite its neutrality, San Marino was bombed and invaded. The railway, seriously damaged by the English bombing of 26 June 1944, made its final run the following month to transport evacuees from Rimini.
During the years of conflict, the galleries were also equipped to provide hospitality to the over 100,000 Italians who asked for refuge. In recent years the administration has been committed to the recovery of the tunnels and the route as a cycle-pedestrian path.

The climb to San Marino old town covers many laces and is very great and steady. It reminds us the finish of a stage of the Giro. Then, visit of the old area is a must do, for the view and the fascinating history of the place.

Montale Tower

Highlight • Monument

The Torre del Montale is one of the three towers of San Marino, together with the Guaita and the Cesta. It was built in the 14th century and used as a watchtower during the wars against the Malatesta family, who ruled the surrounding area. The tower is located on the top of Monte Titano and is the smallest of the three towers

Porta San Francesco

Highlight • Historical Site

Main gate of the third ring of the walls, called Porta del Paese or Porta San Francesco, constitutes the official entrance to the historic center of the City of San Marino. Once it was called Porta del Loco, a term that derives from the nearby convent of San Francesco.

Built in 1361 as a simple guard post on the third ring of the walls, in 1451 it was enlarged and raised and crowned with battlements. The Gate, closed every evening in the past, today always open, consists of a pointed arch surmounted by a bertesca on which the stone coat of arms of the Republic is placed.

Under the vault, two plaques reproduce the provisions of the Statute relating to the defense of the country. On the internal facade two stone coats of arms recall the ancient friendship between the Republic and the Montefeltro.

This elegant bronze figure of the girl by the artist Francesco Messina was acquired in 1982 by the Savings Bank of the Republic of San Marino to decorate its gallery on the occasion of the centenary of its foundation.

The work is now part of the art collection of the Fundación San Marino Cassa di Risparmio - S.U.M.S.

The plasticity and sensuality of the model give the sculpture an attitude of relaxed abandonment: the compositional balance of the statue conveys a feeling of deep serenity to the environment, revising the Mediterranean and ancestral style that has always been the artist's favorite reference.

San Marino Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The city's buildings shine in bright colors against the green of Monte Titano.
The cityscape of San Marino is characterized by three mighty castles, also called the Three Towers, which can be visited.
Especially from the Piazza della Libertà you have a fantastic panoramic view of the rugged landscapes of the Apennines.
