Châtenois on the Wine Route, Châtenois on the Wine Route

Highlight • Other

Châtenois, ideally located on the Wine Route, is a fortified city with a unique charm. Two enclosures surround the town, dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. Ramparts staged each year during the traditional “Fête des Remparts” in June:

These places are listed as Historic Monuments thanks in particular to the Witches' Tower, a 15th century Gothic tower gate located on the second enclosure; and the 18th century St Georges Church. Push open the door of the latter where you will discover one of the masterpieces of the organ builder Silbermann.
From the church, walk on the interpretive trail along the ramparts then go down towards the heart of the town. Get lost in the streets and let yourself be seduced by the typical Alsatian houses where geraniums bloom on the balconies every summer.
You can also explore the surrounding cycle paths during the annual Slow Up in June: slowup-alsace.fr

End your walk with a visit to the cellars and stop at one of the town's good restaurants which offer different local specialties such as tarte flambée.

Scherwiller Village Center

Highlight • Settlement

The town has pretty half-timbered houses and Renaissance buildings. The district on the Aubach is very picturesque. The watchtower with bay window and the tithe farm date from 1670. In 1525 a massacre of revolting peasants took place here (German Peasants' War). Scherwiller is dominated by the ruins of Ortenberg and Ramstein castles.

Scherwiller, Capital of Riesling

Highlight • Settlement

The meanders of the Aubach, still punctuated by five wash houses, give Scherwiller incredible charm. The center of the village is full of beautiful winegrowers' houses, with their emblazoned pink sandstone porches and their half-timbered facades from the 15th and 18th centuries. Note the Guardhouse House, a superb building with an oriel window and sculpted balcony (17th century). A stone's throw away, at number 35 rue de la Mairie, admire the Tonnelier farm (18th century), its cart door, its half-timbered floor with corbelling and its ornate corner post.
On the heights of Scherwiller sleep the ruins of the Ramstein and Ortenburg castles

Of all the landscapes on the Alsace Vineyard Cycle Route, the arrival in Dambach-la-Ville offers one of the most beautiful views. In the middle of the vineyards, the historic center stands beautifully with the Rhine plain as a backdrop.
