Valley of the Three Provinces

Highlight • Monument

This passage over a bridge in this valley dug by the Sèvre Nantaise is located at the exact confluence of the 3 municipalities and departments each representing one of the 3 historical provinces: Boussay, Loire Atlantique (44) for Brittany, Torfou, Maine and Loire (49) for Anjou, La Bruffière, Vendée (85) for Poitou.
It is a peaceful valley with an inn. On the map, this place is found under its real name: "La Grossière", but it is still less elegant...
For cyclists, it's an opportunity to go uphill with also 3 choices: a gentler slope (approximately 4 or 5%) going towards Torfou and Maine et Loire, steeper (6 to 8%) going towards the Bruffière and the Vendée, and can be even a little steeper (6 to 9%) on the small road which goes up towards the north and allows to branch off towards Boussay and the Loire Atlantique.

The Church of Saint Radegund and Saint Sebastian replaced the former chapel of the Boussay priory, which existed as early as 1100. Rebuilt in 1667, it was burned down during the French Revolution and then restored in 1820. Too small, the chapel was rebuilt in 1872. Its stained-glass windows and frescoes recount the story of Saint Radegund, the wife of the Merovingian king Clotaire. He murdered her brother, which led to the queen's flight. Becoming a nun, she founded the Abbey of Sainte-Croix in Poitiers. Boussay was among the lands bequeathed to her by the king. The frescoes were painted by Loue. They also depict Our Lady of Lourdes, Saint Sebastian, Saint Genevieve, and Saint Blandina. Restrooms and a bakery are located in front of the church.

The Rousselin mill

Highlight • Historical Site

Typical village with its old stone mill and its footbridge. Rousselin takes its name from the fact that flax was retted here.

Tiffauges Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castle that belonged to Gilles de Rais, lord of the Marches of Brittany who inspired the myth of Bluebeard. The region of the Marches of Brittany marked the border between the Kingdom of France and Brittany, stretching from Tiffauges to Pornic, passing through Clisson, Machecoul (other castles) and Saint-Étienne-de-Mer-Morte.

Church of Our Lady of Tiffauges

Highlight • Religious Site

A recent (18th century) but rather pretty church. It can be seen from afar as it stands on a high slope in the Sèvres. The square is pleasant, with restrooms and drinking water located under the medieval market halls.
There are a few beautiful old houses on Grande Rue and Rue de l’Aumônerie.
Note: The Chemin du Gaberneau is not suitable for cycling (stairs).
