Ancient Theatre of Arles

Highlight • Historical Site

In ancient times, Arles was known as the "Gallic Rome". Its great act was - when it was under the reign of Emperor Augustus towards the end of the 1st century BC. It is a very special building: one of the first theaters in the Roman Empire to be made entirely of stone.
The theater still serves as a spectacular backdrop for various outdoor performances, mostly between the end of June and the end of August. Almost 20 rows of the wide spectator stands have been preserved, as well as two pillars of the old stage.

Saint-Trophime Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Impressive and surprisingly well preserved sculpture details in the medieval façade.
The former Saint-Trophime Cathedral was initially a Roman Catholic abbey church of the Benedictine order, later the bishop's church of Arles. Today it is the most important building in the city of Arles and an important example of Romanesque architecture. The Romanesque part of the church was built between 1100 and 1150. Between 1454 and 1464 the Gothic choir was added and some other changes were made. On the south side was the Saint-Trophime monastery until 1792, arranged around the cloister of the church.
Saint-Trophime was the first bishop of Arles in 250. Augustine of Canterbury returned to Arles in 597 after his missionary journeys to England. Because of this, the Anglican Church still has a connection with this cathedral.

Arles Town Hall (City Hall)

Highlight • Historical Site

When he built the town hall in 1675 according to plans by Hardouin-Mansart, the Arles-born architect Peytret took over the clock tower (16th century) from the previous building, which is modeled on the mausoleum on the Plateau des Antiques in St-Rémy-de-Provence. The almost flat vault in the vestibule deserves attention, a real masterpiece. The construction of the two keystones is still a secret to the architects.

Quai du Rhône

Highlight • River

Famous for the evening reflection of the bank lamps in the Rhône. Here van Gogh painted his "Starry Night over the Rhône" by the light of a gas lamp (not to be confused with his later "Starry Night" from the sanatorium). Today the starting point for an evening stroll along the shore and a little way back on the opposite shore. Bonne soirée!

Cavalry Gate

Highlight • Monument

"La Porte de la Cavalerie" is the medieval northern gate of the former walled city of Arles. Dating back to the 13th century, the two side gate towers through which one enters the city center from Arles train station are still standing today.
