White Hill Summit on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard

Highlight • Summit

Highest point between Fairfax and San Geronimo, the saddle was originally cut for the train in the 19th century, later widened for the highway. Can be busy but has a wide bike lane.

San Geronimo

Highlight • Settlement

Slightly spread-out community nestled mostly along the creek valley with a friendly vibe and just a couple of eateries and convenience stores, though about twice a month volunteers offer a free groceries pantry behind the church to help reduce foodwaste, and the food also helps low-income residents. The train station, at the time called Nicasio Station, was abandoned and bought by the church in th mid 20th century, now renovated as offices. Sir Francis Drake Blvd goes as Hwy 101 through the valley and has a wide shoulder, though there are long sections where it can be avoided on parallel local roads.

The hiker/biker campground in Samuel P Taylor State Park under beautiful redwoods (the tallest trees in the world) is a convenient base which is always available without reservation for hikers/bikers throughout the year even if the campgrounds are booked out by car drivers months in advance. Coin-operated hot showers (50 cent for 5 minutes, but often the hot water is on free of charge so try it first).
It is located right off the bike/hike-only, paved Cross Marin Trail komoot.de/highlight/198015

Cross Marin Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This trail, part of the Pacific Coast Bike Trail (PCB), is a fantastic, mostly paved two-lane bike route that follows Lagunitas Creek under towering redwood forests and runs parallel to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard on the other side of the valley. It continues south from the campground all the way to the southern exit of the Park.

Nicasio Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

This shallow reservoir appeared as a consequence of the construction of the Seeger Dam in 1961. It contributes to making the landscape look beautiful out here.

Nicasio

Highlight • Settlement

Handful of historic town buildings (some are a museum), church, ranch now a grocery store, around a large square sports field.

The Big Rock - Skywalker Ranch

Highlight • Natural Monument

As the name implies, a big bolder marks the crest of Lucas Valley Road above Skywalker Ranch, the elusive retreat and production studios of George Lucas and his various film projects.

Nicasio Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

Sprawling, somewhat shallow reservoir lake filling the wide valley that looks like a hot desert most of summer and fall. Several branches are crossed by the road at high water levels, but not seen in many years.
