Description
If you're looking for an easy hiking route with a big payoff, the Governor Dick – Governor Dick Hill loop from Mount Gretna is definitely worth your time. This 4.2-mile (6.7 km) easy hike packs in 476 feet (145 metres) of elevation gain over about 1 hour and 53 minutes, making it a fantastic option for a quick outing with rewarding panoramic views, especially for families or those new to hiking.
What to expect on Governor Dick – Governor Dick Hill loop from Mount Gretna
The route takes you through classic Pennsylvania woodlands, with trails that shift from wide and flat to narrow and steep, often featuring rocks, roots, and stumps underfoot. While the forest itself is pleasant, the real highlight is the 66-foot Governor Dick Observation Tower. The initial climb towards the tower can be strenuous, but the reward is a panoramic 360-degree view from the top, stretching across five Pennsylvania counties on a clear day. Just be prepared for the internal ladder climb if you plan to ascend the tower; it's not for everyone, especially if you're claustrophobic or have mobility issues.
Planning your visit
The park has an Environmental Center where you can get assistance and trail maps, which is a good idea as signage can sometimes be spotty. Parking for Governor Dick Hill hiking is available at the park. After your hike, consider a stop at the nearby Jigger shop in Mount Gretna for ice cream, or enjoy the picnic tables at the Environmental Center.
