Description
The Coldwater Creek loop from North Ogden is one of those touring cycling routes that truly tests your mettle, offering a difficult 10.7 miles (17.2 km) with a substantial 1594 feet (486 metres) of climbing, all packed into an estimated 1 hours and 42 minutes. If you're looking for a challenging ride with big views and don't mind rugged terrain, this route delivers a rewarding experience that feels less crowded than other local trails.
What to expect on Coldwater Creek loop from North Ogden
This route takes you through varied terrain, starting with packed gravel roads that transition into dirt and then significant rocky sections, including talus boulder fields. You'll navigate winding paths designed to mitigate extreme steepness, but be prepared for a constant effort. The scenery is a highlight, with excellent views of Ben Lomond and the broader North Ogden area, and occasional glimpses of the Great Salt Lake and the Oquirrh Mountains. You'll also pass through a unique spruce-fir forest, a rare sight on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, and ride along cliffs offering superb vantage points.
Planning your visit
While listed as a touring cycling route, the Coldwater Creek loop is generally more suitable for mountain bikes or robust hybrid bikes due to its rugged and technical surface. Be aware that sections of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail south of Coldwater can become extremely narrow and steep, even unsuitable for bikes. The trail is part of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, with access points in North Ogden. Consider visiting during Veterans Day to see the massive flag flown across the canyon.
