Park Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

Park Abbey, just outside Leuven, is a beautiful historic site dating back to the 12th century. This Norbertine abbey was founded in 1129 and is one of the best preserved abbeys in Belgium.

The abbey complex includes a church, monastery buildings, water mill, ponds and an extensive park. The buildings are a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical styles, offering a unique and rich architectural experience.

The abbey was an important religious and cultural center for centuries. Today the abbey is still inhabited by Premonstratensians and hosts various community activities.

Weertse Dreef

Highlight • Trail

Cycling along the Weertse Dreef is a wonderful way to discover the natural beauty of this unique area.

Together with the Egenhoven Forest, the Meerdaal Forest and the Heverlee Forest cover an area of 2050 hectares and form the largest mixed deciduous forest in Flanders. In contrast to the otherwise fertile soils of the surrounding lands, this soil is sandy to loamy. Therefore, you will find a large variety of plants such as coltsfoot, common sage bush, moorberry, wild strawberry, chickweed, marsh fern and false sage, which are satisfied with nutrient-poor soils.

Be very quiet and you might see deer - in these forests you will find the oldest deer population in Flanders. Bird lovers will also get their money's worth here and can watch songbirds and birds of prey.

Don't be surprised if you suddenly see dwarves, monsters, trolls or goblins - the oxygen hasn't gone to your head. On the "Path of Ad" you can discover mysterious and fairytale tree sculptures.

Leuven Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The town hall of Leuven is one of the most famous Gothic town halls in the world and is located on the Grote Markt in Leuven.
The plans for the town hall of Leuven are based on and inspired by the town hall of Bruges. The town hall of Bruges is one of the oldest in Belgium and, in addition to that of Leuven, served as a model for the town halls of Oudenaarde, Brussels and Ghent, among others. The stones were made of Ledian stone from quarries such as De Helle in Dilbeek.
The town hall has three floors. There are two niches between the windows, which protrude slightly. Three of the four corner towers also have niches. The corbels are sculpted representations from the Bible. The recurring theme is guilt and penance. They had a didactic and admonishing function. During the first restoration in the nineteenth century, most of them were replaced; however, the original corbels are located in the attic of the town hall. Since the city services moved to the City Office at Professor Roger Van Overstraetenplein (at the station), the historic city hall is only used for ceremonies.

October 6, 2024,🌈 Rainbow Gravel Ride - WK 2024 🦄 Zooo leuk! Voor de gravelliefhebber 🫶🏽
What a fantastic day! Really enjoyed the varied route, the nice gravel vibes, the sunny weather, the beautiful nature, the relaxed atmosphere and the excellent organization. And the Brabant forests: what a delight to cycle between the large and long forest paths! 😍 I will do that route again but then in spring / summer! I will be back! 🚴🏽‍♀️

The final of the 2024 Gravel World Championship. Nice loop around Leuven with parts where you can ride hard on the gravel bike. Not too many technical parts, relatively good surface.
Note: the route of the World Championship runs along the ponds of Abdij van Park, you are not allowed to cycle there (this route already takes a small detour …
