The Delftsche Poort in Rotterdam was a city gate, the last of which was built in 1764 to a design by architect Pieter de Swart [1]. It was already the third gate at that place: the previous two had been demolished due to dilapidation. The first gate was built in the Middle Ages and was named the Noorderpoort and had a front gate. The second St. Joris or Delftsche Poort was built in 1545. [2]

In the 1930s, the gate stood in the way: Rotterdam wanted a better flow of increasing traffic. It was decided to move the gate about a hundred meters (breaking it met with too much resistance). The relocation of the whole began in 1939. The substructure was completed in 1940, during the bombing both this part and the stored sculptures were damaged. A year later it was decided that "in the opinion of the majority of the experts consulted, the gate could no longer be finished and had to disappear completely". Some ornamental works were saved and incorporated into the walls of the buildings on the corner of Stadhuisplein.

Fifty years later, a reconstruction in steel, designed by the artist Cor Kraat, was erected on almost the original site of the Delft gate on the Pompenburg. Around the gate are some remnants of the carved ornaments that adorned the original gate.
