Gondebeek Valley

Highlight • Natural

We are working on a larger nature reserve between the municipalities of Gontrode, Lemberge, Moortsele and Landskouter. The Gondebeek valley, after the stream that flows through the area, is a lake area that mainly consists of moist hay meadows, wet brushwoods, pollard tree rows and smaller groves. Currently, about 8 hectares are owned by Natuurpunt Oosterzele. However, the vision area is more than 10 times larger. The largest part is designated as “valley area”. Part of the vision area is designated as a habitat directive area and/or VEN. Moreover, a large part of the vision area consists of biologically valuable plots. In the coming years, we want to allow the nature reserve to grow steadily within this vision area through targeted purchases.

In the northeast, the Gondebeek valley connects to the Aelmoeseneie forest complex, which is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests and the Forestry Lab of Ghent University. In this way, a larger nature complex with great nature (experience) value is formed. The various managers recently consulted with the intention, among other things, to make the area more open to recreation.

ILVO

Highlight • Structure

In this area there are a number of numbered test fields and buildings of the Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Research (ILVO). This Flemish scientific institution has 200 ha of test fields, 15,000 m2 of greenhouses and more than 20,000 m2 of test stables. The research starts from social and policy points of interest such as climate, energy efficiency, de-hardening, water buffering and increasing biodiversity.

The Chair of Heritage

Highlight • Historical Site

The Heritage Chair (artwork by Renato Nicolodi) overlooks Gontrode Airport.

In the spring of 1915 a huge airship base was built by the German army in the coulters of Gontrode and Lemberge.
German soldiers built a gigantic hall suitable for mooring zeppelins.
Later, Gotha IV aircraft also took off from this airbase.
Both the zeppelins and the Gothas were used to carry out bombing raids on Great Britain.

On top of the bunker is a panorama table with text and explanation.

Boardwalk in Aelmoeseneiebos

Highlight • Structure

The Aelmoeseneiebos is located in the province of East Flanders, between the urbanized area of Ghent and the Flemish Ardennes. The forest is 28.5 hectares in size and is located on the territory of the municipalities of Melle and Oosterzele. The Ghent-Geraardsbergen railway line divides the forest in two.
As far as we know, most of the Aelmoeseneiebos has always been forest. It is 'old forest'. The oldest maps showing land use in Flanders are the maps of Count de Ferraris from 1775. On these, part of the Aelmoeseneiebos is already colored as a forest.

Small piece of natural beauty, a stone's throw from Ghent. Ideal base for the ForNaLab (Forest & Nature Lab) of Ghent University. A number of marshy paths lead you through part of the old forest.
