Fleinus Forest Path

Highlight • Trail

De Fleinus is a forest in Sint-Laureins on the route of the Graafjansdijk. Until the 1970s, it was used by local youth clubs, who played and built camps among the numerous ferns. During our visit, memories of this time, the 60s and 70s, came to mind through the specific scent of the flora.

The forest was used for pheasant breeding for a while, so that it lost its individuality and character. The area was purchased in 2016 by Natuurpunt, who wants to restore it under its official name 'Zonnebos'. The forest is located in a neighborhood that is locally called 'De Zonne', hence the name Zonnebos.

Bentillekreek Picnic Area

Highlight • Rest Area

The picnic area at the Bentillekreek has been greatly modified with a beautifully developing green environment and additional elements. Since 2021 there is an extra picnic bench with a board game. This is actually part of a walk with a second picnic bench in the Zonnebos, but can of course also be used on its own. You can read more about that walk, "On the way with the Zonnekoning", which was developed by Natuurpunt Meetjesland and partners here: npmeetjesland.be/2021/12/08/promeet-nr-52-zonnekoning /

At the picnic area itself you will also find information boards and of course beautiful views. Other picnic tables in the area: at the foot ferry and at the Eel experience spot.

Bentillekreek

Highlight • Lake

Typical for Sint-Jan-in-Eremo are the five creeks (approx. 65 ha). The creeks are old peat pits, which were created by the exploitation of the bog or peat areas. These pits were increasingly eroded during numerous floods and storm surges. The Bentillekreek is one of the five creeks in Sint-Jan-in-Eremo. It has a very irregular shape and is bordered by the Leopold Canal.

Towpath Leopoldskanaal

Highlight (Segment) • River

The Leopold Canal was dug in the famine years of 'Arm Vlaanderen', 1846 - 1848. The canal runs from Boekhoute to Heist and had to drain the excess polder water and dry out the grounds. In this way, the polders would be freed from the high humidity that caused the population to suffer from the so-called 'polder fevers'.

Sint-Jans Bridge 'In Eremo'

Highlight • Bridge

Bridge to the abandoned polder land 'In Eremo'.
'In Eremo' means in Latin, 'in the desert'.
The vastness and lack of buildings give this part of the Meetjesland an unreal image. Walking through a void that is not a void.
