Levada Trail Through the Laurissilva Forest

Highlight • Trail

The levada leads several times through rocks, impressive what work had to be done here to build this levade.

There are three tunnels along the PR 16 Levada Fajã do Rodrigues above Sao Vicente. which you have to cross if you want to get to the Ribera do Inferno. You definitely need a flashlight for all tunnels. The first two tunnels are relatively short, maybe 100 meters long. The third tunnel is quite a challenge at 1000 meters long. Only a small part of the levada is covered, otherwise you have to squeeze past each other in oncoming traffic or jump into the levada. The moisture from the mountain penetrates the rock in many places. In the light of the flashlights it looks as if there are countless sparkling diamonds stuck to the carved walls.

You need surefootedness and balance to get through the tunnel on the stale path.

That's just something for the hard-core. We turned around a third. After a while, one wonders why I voluntarily walk through a narrow, dripping tunnel through which I have to go back.

Despite the bad weather, we still did a nice walk close to our accommodation. Amazing 😍 but we didn't go through the last tunnel because it was too dangerous. A few hundred meters of tunnels very low and small

Attempt number 2 – and this time we found it right away.
Little tip: The hiking trails are marked on the map with "PR" and a number. Just enter it into Maps – and then step on it 🚜.
Back to the topic: The hiking trail was excellently developed at the beginning – at least until the first tunnel. Afterwards, …

Short hike along the levada to the long tunnel. Unfortunately, Kommoot always has a few dropouts. I saved myself the way back with the recording.

Easy hike with a few tunnels. We didn't do the longest. You need light in the shorter tunnels.
The height meters given are nonsense, at most 100 m.

Well, the altitude is wrong. Except for the first climb from the car park to the Levada, it was almost horizontal. The path is officially closed. As a German, you understand that, because falling rocks have meant that there are lots of missing railings in places where you could fall really far.

The hike along Levada Fajã do Rodrigues is rather leisurely and partly suitable for children from around 6 years of age; however, all participants must be sure-footed.

Sturdy shoes, a headlamp and rain gear are recommended, otherwise parts of the hike will be uncomfortable.

At the end of the hiking holiday we discovered a beautiful levada. It felt like being in the jungle. At the beginning of the tour there is a wide levada with steps. The levada itself is also wider than most of the others and there are trout in it. The path leads past three waterfalls and through three tunnels. The …

I've never experienced a tour like this before.
Simply amazing, amazing...I can't even find the words!
There were three tunnels. The last one is 1km long; I had to turn around in the middle because it was so narrow and there was oncoming traffic, so I was afraid of falling into the levada. Besides, the tour ended behind the tunnel. …
