Old town of Haslach

Highlight • Historical Site

Haslach looks back on a long history, with the first settlement dating back to the 1st century AD. From the 17th century onward, the town developed as a market town. The wide streets and squares typical of that time are completely preserved. Together with the narrow residential and artisan alleys, they give the old town its charm. The old town has been a listed monument since 1978.

As an alternative to the main road, you can cycle on the field road that is only open to agricultural traffic. This way you don't have to worry about fast, motorized traffic and can concentrate fully on your tour through the Black Forest.

Old and New Town Halls, Freiburg

Highlight • Historical Site

Old - New Town Hall, Freiburg im Breisgau
Freiburg has the great privilege of having several town halls. Distinguishing between them is tricky, however, because the New Town Hall is older than the Old Town Hall, and the oldest town hall in the city is called the Rechtslaube.
But don't worry, we'll try to solve the confusion for you:
Court arbor from 1303, the city's first town hall
The old town hall, completed in 1559, has been the seat of administration since its completion
The new town hall, built between 1539 and 1545, has also been used as a town hall since 1891
The reason for the unusual naming lies in the history of the buildings. King Maximilian I complained at the end of the 15th century that the court arbor was too small and “clumsy”. Due to a lack of space, the Old Town Hall was completed in 1559 and the majority of Freiburg's administration moved there. Since the New Town Hall belonged to the university until 1891, its use as an administrative building is new, but the building is the older of the two. Even today, the different administrative units are still spread across both town halls. The court arbor premises are used for official receptions. So much for orientation.
The New Town Hall was created from the connection of two magnificent Renaissance houses, which was created by a representative, gable-decorated column portal. After a number of renovations, the New Town Hall acquired its current appearance at the end of the 19th century. Since then, larger windows, balconies and bay windows have adorned the whitewashed building. The interior of the New Town Hall is also a true gem. Elaborate wood carvings and stucco ornaments on the ceilings conjure up a romantic flair in the spacious rooms. Here, in the former work rooms of the north wing, the people of Freiburg particularly like to say “I do”.

Kornhaus, Freiburg im Breisgau

Highlight • Historical Site

Kornhaus, Freiburg im Breisgau
The construction of the guild and dance house was to be completed for the visit of King Maximilian I in 1498. The rooms were intended for the celebrations and sessions of the Reichstag, which the then king had called. Since these could not be completed in time, the Reichstag had to meet in the courthouse. Bad for the king, who complained about a lack of space in his meeting rooms, good for the guilds and citizens of the city, who were allowed to dance and celebrate in the Kornhaus after its completion.
The music was followed by laughter and applause, because from 1770 to 1824 the Kornhaus was transformed into a stage for professional actors who presented classical plays and comedies here. With the founding of the city theater and the relocation of the ensemble, peace returned to the Kornhaus in the middle of the 19th century. Until the Second World War it served as a granary for grain traders.
After reconstruction between 1969 and 1971, life returned to the building with the striking stepped gables. Today, the Centre Culturel Français, an ice cream parlor and some pretty shops are located there.

Historic department store, Freiburg im Breisgau
In the Middle Ages, standing in line meant that merchants had to wait at the city gate after an arduous journey in a horse-drawn cart. Here the goods were checked and the amount of customs duty was determined. That could take some time - especially when trade in Freiburg increased significantly in the 14th century. The city gates were literally bursting at the seams, and so it was essential to set up a place specifically for goods storage and customs clearance. Such a house belonging to the city market administration was mentioned for the first time in 1378.
As an extension of these areas, the cathedral architect Lienhart Müller built the historical department store at the beginning of the 16th century, approximately between 1520 and 1532. Moved forward from the line of neighboring buildings, the magnificent façade with its artfully decorated bay towers and arcades is particularly effective.
The 300 square meter inner courtyard is hidden behind the wide entrance gate. Where goods were once stored, open-air events such as the “Freiburger Weinkost” now take place.
The inner courtyard is connected to the fireplace room via a spiral staircase. Inserted into this room in the 15th century by the then cathedral architect, he gave it its name.
While the pompous Imperial Hall impresses with its mighty oak columns, virtuoso ceiling ornaments from the 18th century in the Rococo Hall create an artistic sky over the guests.
