What to expect on Stones River Greenway – Stones River Greenway near I-40 loop from Hermitage
The route unfolds as a journey through diverse scenery, primarily on a paved, multi-use path. You'll cycle alongside the Stones River, enjoying lush greenery, hardwood forests, and unique cedar glades, with glimpses of beautiful limestone formations. While the overall difficulty is easy, be prepared for some short but hard hills and steep climbs, like the one noted near the Two Rivers Skate Park, which add a good workout to the ride. The trail passes by historic sites such as the Clover Bottom Mansion and Two Rivers Mansion, and you'll encounter stunning bike and pedestrian-only bridges offering excellent viewpoints. Much of the route is shaded by overhanging trees, providing a cooler ride, though you might notice some noise as you approach the interstate.
Planning your visit
Accessing the Stones River Greenway is straightforward, with multiple trailheads available, including convenient parking near Kohl's and the YMCA in Hermitage. While the trail is generally smooth, be aware that some older sections might have asphalt cracks or puckers caused by tree roots. It's worth noting that a boardwalk section, previously a unique feature, was indefinitely closed for safety as of September 2024. The shaded portions make it a pleasant ride even during warmer parts of the day.
