Auditorium Maximum, University of Göttingen (Georg-August University)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Audimax, or rather the old auditorium of the Georg August University of Göttingen, is located at Weender Landstrasse 2 in Göttingen, directly next to the Wall and adjacent to Heinz-Ehrhardt-Platz. Built by Friedrich Doeltz in the neo-Gothic style between 1862 and 1865 and opened in 1866, the auditorium (lecture hall building) was expanded with an annex in 1901 and 1902, thus becoming the "Auditorium Maximum." In addition to departments of the Institute of Legal History, it has housed the university's art collection since 1987. According to the website of the Department of Art History, the collection includes approximately 300 paintings, 2,500 drawings, 15,000 prints, and around 100 sculptures. In addition, there are around 150 works by video artists from all over the world. The collection's greatest treasures include works by Dürer, Botticelli, Rembrandt, and Goya, as well as modernists such as Nolde, Beckmann, and Modersohn-Becker.

Opening hours (according to the website, as of June 2017) are Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is: Adults €3; concessions €1.50; families of up to five people €5; members of the Friends' Association, children up to 12 years of age, students, and staff of the University of Göttingen are admitted free.

Only one of the first linden trees exists. Your estimated age: 253 years. During a walk on the city wall - the unique natural, architectural and cultural monument of Göttingen - the tree, which once founded it as a green area, is easy to find - near the Bismarckhäuschens.

The Leine Canal branches off water from the Leine south of the Kiessee and directs it through the city. This water was used, among other things, to drive mills with an undershot water wheel. Some of the names of the mills have survived to this day: Walkemühle, Stegemühle, ... and also the Odilienmühle, which is also called "Little Mill".

Göttingen's green belt around the old town has held a special fascination for generations. In every season, from the delicate green in spring, to the lush foliage in summer, to the red-brown-golden autumn. The wall is exciting even in winter, because then you can really see the mighty giant trees. Should snow fall and exceptionally remain, the wall is a dream in white.

Deutsches Theater Göttingen

Highlight • Monument

The Deutsches Theater (DT) is a playhouse in Göttingen, built in 1890. It is the largest theater in Göttingen. After the major fire at the old city theater on the Neuer Markt, today's Wilhelmsplatz, on the night of January 10-11, 1887, the citizens of Göttingen agreed on the need for a new, dignified theater building. On July 18, 1887, the city council decided to build the theater between the Royal Gymnasium (today's Max Planck Gymnasium) and the Göttingen Wallanlagen in the eastern district. Fears (which reached the district president and the minister of culture) that the theater's proximity would pose a moral threat to the students of the Gymnasium proved to be unfounded. The theater was built in 1889 and 1890 as a replica of the Oldenburg Grand Ducal Court Theater by architect Nierenheim, based on the plans of the Oldenburg court architect Gerhard Schnitger, as a stone building in the Neo-Renaissance style.

Between 1958 and 1963, Götz George, who later became nationally known as the crime scene detective "Schimanski," played at the DT.

Within the rampart are several publicly accessible greenhouses: Historic Fern House, Orangery, Cold House, Rainforest House, Cycad House, Arum House, Succulent House, and Cactus House. You can find many different, partly exotic plants there. Highly recommended. 😊

January 30, 2024,Ausblicke vom Göttinger Stadtwall und Besuch der Galerie „Alte Feuerwache“
After we have already walked countless times on the Duderstadt city wall, today we set our sights on the Göttingen city wall. It was an interesting and varied round with new views for us.
The conclusion was a visit to the “Old Fire Station” gallery. It was the penultimate day of an exhibition by gallery owner Gisela Hyllus. It was …

The Göttingen city wall is only at ground level in one section along Bürgerstraße. The rest of the way is slightly elevated, circling the city center – except for a few passageways for cars.

The special tour of Göttingen's vaulted cellars is truly something special. In the cellars beneath the city, you learn a wealth of interesting facts about life from the 15th to the 19th centuries. We stood in a mikveh, a Jewish purification bath, in a medieval boiler room from which the city's senators were personally heated up under their robes, in …
