Rheine Station

Highlight • Rest Area

Rheine station was once a major railway junction. Here, the former railway lines to Ochtrup, towards Oberhausen via Burgsteinfurt and Coesfeld (both excellently developed as the "Münsterland Cycle Route"), towards Bremen via Fürstenau and Quakenbrück (still used for freight traffic as far as Spelle), and part of the Tecklenburg Northern Railway to Osnabrück via Recke all converged. Their platforms still exist, but are dilapidated and inaccessible. Of these, only track 8 is still in operation (regional express train to Krefeld), as well as the lines towards Münster, Osnabrück, Emsland, and the Netherlands. The former large steam locomotive depot with its freight yard along the current cycle route is now occupied by commercial buildings. The two "Münsterland Cycle Routes" can be accessed via the newly developed western entrance, located away from the town center (see our own highlight: komoot.com/de-de/highlight/4918870).

Historic Market Square, Rheine

Highlight • Historical Site

With its 73,000 inhabitants, Rheine is the second largest city in the Münsterland. The city is divided into almost two equal parts by the Ems, but the Dortmund-Ems Canal is also not far away. In addition to some very beautiful baroque buildings (such as the mill on the Emswehr), Rheine offers a variety of nature experiences such as the saltworks park in the northwest or the nature zoo.

St. Dionysius Parish Church, Rheine

Highlight • Religious Site

If you enter the city church, you can admire the starry vault, which depicts many patron saints. The church is also a real eye-catcher from the outside.

The inscription refers to the almost total destruction of the city during the Thirty Years' War. The facade is well preserved. The house is located directly on the Marktpkatz and opposite the Dionysiuskirche.
