Description

If you're looking for a serious challenge with massive rewards, the Lower Cascade Falls – Upper Cascade Falls loop from Ouray is a difficult 8.0-mile (12.9 km) jogging route that packs in 2723 feet (830 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 2 hours and 15 minutes. This loop is best suited for experienced joggers or power hikers who are ready for a strenuous workout and panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains.

What to expect on Lower Cascade Falls – Upper Cascade Falls loop from Ouray

The journey begins with the more accessible Lower Cascade Falls Trail, a moderately busy path from downtown Ouray that quickly leads you to the delightful waterfall, close enough to feel the spray. As you climb towards the Amphitheater Campground, the terrain steepens significantly. The Upper Cascade Falls Trail then presents a much more challenging experience, with steep switchbacks gaining over 1,100 feet in just under a mile through scrub oaks and mixed conifers. You'll traverse a rocky ledge and cross a ridge, eventually reaching the Upper Cascade Falls, all while enjoying tantalizing views of the sculpted walls of the amphitheater, Hayden Mountain, Potosi Peak, and the Sneffels Range, with Ouray nestled 2,300 feet below.

Planning your visit

The Lower Cascade Falls trailhead is conveniently located at the end of 8th Avenue in downtown Ouray, making it easily accessible. Given the significant elevation gain and technical terrain, especially on the upper sections, it's wise to carry plenty of water, even for a 2-hour and 15-minute jog. This trail is often recommended for experienced hikers, so be prepared for a strenuous workout. The best time to tackle this loop is typically during warmer months when the trails are clear of snow and ice.
