Obermaubach Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

A truly lovely spot for a break. From here you have a wonderful view over the reservoir. For a light snack or a delicious coffee, I recommend Café Fink near the bridge. Listening to the sound of the fish ladder, enjoying a good slice of cake, and a cup of coffee makes for a very relaxing experience.

Hindenburg Gate

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Hindenburg Gate is a colorful sandstone rock. The rock was created in the Triassic during the period of Buntsandstein about 220 million years ago from rubble and sand. The rivers that flow into the basins from the mountains brought with them sand, gravel and clay fragments. At that time, medium-sized sandstones as well as piles of various sizes were deposited in a depression, which, after solidification, form today's conglomerate. The sand came from a mountain range in today's central France and was deposited and solidified in the Eifel area. The rock is predominantly red in color. Locally, however, the dyeings go from gruesome to black. The formation of the rock can be thought of as having been washed down by heavy rainfall debris from the hills into the valley - into a depression - and leveled there.

The Eifelverein, Ortsgruppe Nideggen, decided in the meeting on 24.03.1918 the following: "Enthusiasm awakened the suggestion of the chairman, a rock group in the jungholz, a giant gate as towed by Cyklopenhänden, Hindenburgtor to call and so our greatest general a natural monument to dedicate, as it might hardly be found more beautiful and mighty in German lands. "

Buntsandstein Cliffs (Rur Valley)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Beautiful rock formations made of red sandstone. The red sandstone cliffs in the Rur Valley have been under nature protection since 1999. Eagle owls have been breeding here again for some time. Every year the eagle owls are counted in the rocks of the Rur valley and the young are ringed. In 2017, five uhu pairs were able to raise ten cubs in the Rur Valley. Magnificent view of the Rur Valley and the reservoir. The forest chapel was built between 1994 and 1996 by the Obermaubach working group and is open to visitors. This "Eifelblick" is a good place for a rest and there are enough benches available.

This "Eifel-Bick" is a good place for a rest and there are enough benches available.
In the immediate vicinity of the forest chapel there is a memorial stone in honor of Countess Alveradis von Molbach (approx. 1155 to 1222).
The legend of Alveradis can be read in detail on the information board.

The climb is sweaty in warm weather, but worth it

Aurora is the name given to this area where the hills stand.

Some of them are still interspersed with ore, which was deposited there as waste rock from the old mine.

And as a viewpoint, it's simply wonderful.

December 31, 2021,211231 Nideggen-Rath - (Guten Rutsch!) Runde durch NSG Rurtal, Obermaubach, Eugenienstein
Today we go to Rath, a small district of Nideggen in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia. You park at the cemetery and then you go around the lake - more precisely the Obermaubach reservoir, which is surrounded by a nature reserve of the same name.

Today I was hiking for the first time in or from Obermaubach. It's really nice there. The first part of the round led over the panorama path and had great views. In addition, we had suitable sunshine this morning ☀️😊 Then we continued on the rock path. Very nice lap 👌 and we made it to the car before the …

Very nice but also demanding tour. Since there are a few meters of altitude in the tour and the downward passage from Eugenienstein is not exactly easy to walk. The view from the forest chapel and the Eugenienstein is very beautiful. The Hinkelsteine and the Hindenburg Gate, which are made of red sandstone, are very impressive. The tour with the …

Today we went from Obermaubach around the reservoir past the sandstone cliffs back via Zerkall and Bergstein. Stable altitude today. The last climb was hard, but the tour was a lot of fun. I had some nice new views of the reservoir today.

Today we went to the Rureifel, area Zerkall - Obermaubach - Nideggen. Basically on path 07 "Felspassage" (exception: initial section after the third Rur bridge to Obermaubach, where we stayed in the valley), which is wide and gravel. You pass a starting point for paragliders and the Obermaubach forest chapel, before later passing the interesting climbing rocks made of federal …

Hike from Obermaubach. Unfortunately Komoot doesn't want to save my photos. Half of the hike is mountainous, from the descent from Burg Nideggen, which is a bit adventurous, it becomes level. Shortly before the red sandstone area, the ground turns pink and glitters in the sun. The exposed viewpoints are worth seeing. Great view.
The Hindenburg Gate is very impressive. …

Thanks to Mr. Pfade for this wonderful tour.
However, I did without the adventure of the riverside path and went the higher parallel path because: - I could not assess the flood damage on the riverside path,
- it rained during the night and it was very slippery,
- I was traveling alone
All in all, beautiful little paths and …

Hike from Obermaubach to Niedeggen, first along the mountains, back along the Rur.
Highlights are: stop for coffee and cake and enjoy beautiful views on the meadows along the Rur
