Sophienhof Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The chapel was built in 1873 in the Byzantine round-arch style, as is common in the Russian Orthodox Church. The Lübeck merchant Nikolaus Johanssen, owner of the Sophienhof estate, had the chapel built by the Riga architect Heinrich Carl Scheel (1829-1909) - based on the model of the Russian churches in the Baltic States that he knew from trade relations. The Russian church in Baden-Baden also served as a model.

The entrance area of the chapel consists of a vestibule with three open arcade arches, above which the inscriptions "Glory to God in the highest" and "For the wanderer to contemplate" are written. The central building is designed as a cloverleaf choir, over which a dome was built. In the middle of the choir stands a baptismal angel on a marble base, which was created for the chapel by Eduard Lürssen.

In 1962 the chapel became the property of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Preetz

The Kirchsee is a lake in Holstein Switzerland. It is located in the Preetz municipal area in the Plön district. The original settlement area of Preetz and the town center are located on its western shore. Preetz Town Church, after which the lake is named, is also located there.

Cycle path at Scharsee

Highlight • Cycleway

The Scharsee lake lies northeast of the old B 76 federal highway from Kiel to Plön,
beyond the town limits of Preetz. It is certainly one of the lesser-known lakes, but this body of water certainly has a vibrant history. And it goes back a long way.

Archaeologists are repeatedly interested in a small, forked peninsula on the lake's eastern shore. It extends about 400 meters westward into the water. Here lie the remains of a castle rampart, which today protrudes about two meters above the waterline. This is hardly recognizable to laypeople, as it, like the rest of the surrounding area, is used as pastureland. But it was probably a village schoolteacher who got the ball rolling, so to speak. On a hike with his class in 1886, he discovered bone remains and pottery shards. Researchers began the first excavations as early as 1890. Further investigations followed in 1959 and 1972.
They were able to prove the existence of the two-part Scharstorf Castle.

Accordingly, there must have been a castle rampart with a diameter of approximately 70 meters on the southern shore of the peninsula. The castle presumably existed in the 9th or 10th century. Similar structures existed in Lübeck and Warder in the Segeberg district.

This lake is not suitable for swimming, but after a large and mysterious fish kill in 1986, it has a well-recovered fish population, primarily consisting of perch, bass, and roach, but also 15 other different species.

Area: 36.30 hectares
Elevation above sea level: 20.80 m
Maximum depth: 2.90 m
Average depth: 1.60 m
