To restore the ecological continuity of the Este at the Mühlenteich in Buxtehude, a 586 m long bypass channel was created as a compensation measure for flood protection, bypassing the existing dam as a migration obstacle. The aim of the planning was to create a body of water that is passable for fish and invertebrates both upstream and downstream (fish ladder principle).
The bypass channel branches off from the Este just above the Mühlenteich and runs parallel to the Mühlenteich to Moisburger Strasse. At the Moisburger Strasse intersection, a culvert was built, which was also provided with an emergency closure. The second section of the water runs in the existing ditch structures parallel to the former Granini site. Below the former Granini site, the bypass channel flows back into the Este.
