The southern part of the Reinhardwald has been fenced in on about 100 square kilometers since 1867 and serves as a wildlife sanctuary.

You don't see it ... but you can hear it: Sababurg Zoo.
A nice highlight to walk along this wall in a very natural way.

The Sababurg Primeval Forest in the Reinhardswald Nature Park is one of the most beautiful destinations in northern Hesse! Three different circular trails, two of which can be easily combined, lead through the primeval forest. Strictly speaking, the primeval forest is not a primeval forest, but rather a former grazing forest. The approximately 300-year-old grazing oaks and beeches acquired their current gnarled shape through intensive grazing. Partly over footbridges, you walk through this primeval forest and encounter one special tree after another. Definitely worth a visit! Parking is available right next to the primeval forest. There is also a well-serviced bus stop.

A very nice path through the nature reserve jungle, partly over wooden plank bridges.

October 2, 2021,Dornröschen zieht um. Soll der König nun zu Fuß nach Rom, oder mit dem ÖPNV in den Urwald?
Final hike of our round trip. We are in the Reinhardswald in Northern Hesse. A highlight of the nature park is the Sababurg, which was built in 1334 as a shelter for pilgrims. After the Thirty Years' War it fell into disrepair and a huge hedge of thorns surrounded the castle.

80% of the tour leads over narrow forest paths, beautiful. But: partly overgrown or not accessible, so we had to turn back twice. Navi makes sense, otherwise there is a risk of bleeding.

Today I used the "bad weather" to walk through the jungle again before the summer holidays start.
Unfortunately there was no photo weather... we were out and about for 2 hours in continuous rain.
But no one was there except us and it was like a magic forest.

The Sababurg primeval forest is one of the highlights in the Reinhardswald Nature Park in Northern Hesse. Gnarled, old hatched oaks, meter-high bracken and mystical structures made of dead wood can be admired here.
The Sababurg primeval forest, also known as the primeval forest in the Reinhardswald, is a forest area that has been under nature and landscape protection since …

In the jungle there are many old giant trees to admire.
The path around the wildlife park is partially overgrown and not recommended. It is better to go directly to the castle.

Today we were in the Reinhardswald. The Sababurg was our destination. First we were in the jungle with centuries-old oaks and beeches. Simply worth seeing. Then it was off to the zoo. Here the animals have large enclosures and you cannot see some animals at all. But that doesn't matter.
