Village Square Sterkelshausen

Highlight • Settlement

The village square is in the center of the village and is appropriately decorated by the Sterkel houses at Easter and during Advent. The memorial stone with a bronze plate commemorates the 1000-year celebrations in 2003, and the massive wooden seating area invites you to take a little break. A nicely designed little square for walkers, bikers and the villagers.

Schenkkopf Shelter and Forest Sofa

Highlight • Rest Area

There are five well-marked hiking trails (S1 to S5) and numerous shelters around Sterkelshausen. With a view of the village and the Osterbach mill, the Schenkkopf refuge and a new forest sofa can be found close together.

Nixenstein Monument

Highlight • Monument

The Nixenstein is a work of art placed directly above the mountain lake by the "Art in the Landscape" working group. The approx. 1.50 meter high gypsum block comes from the Oberellenbach gypsum quarry and is dedicated to the three beautiful, snow-white-clad mermaids from the legend of the maidens from the lake. The legend reports that they always came down from the mountain to the village for the fair, danced with the village boys and disappeared every night at a certain time in order to return to the lake in time. But one fell in love with a boy and forgot the time while dancing. The boys and girls accompanied them to the lake together. In front of everyone she jumped in, the lake turned blood red and the mermaids have not been seen since. The group of artists have immortalized footprints up here and ask the question "Are they dancing again?"

Mathilde Barite Mine

Highlight • Historical Site

Remnants of walls and foundations, the loading ramp and an old Lohre have stood the test of time. Even today they point to the Mathilde barn spar mine, which is located directly on the Osterbach, the beginnings of which go back to the years 1893/94. A special mine railway was built to Oberellenbach to transport the barite. Since the mineral was not of high quality, the mining stopped again and again, in 1936 the mine was closed. In 1987, renewed examinations revealed that there were no longer any residual supplies that could be extracted at a reasonable cost. The Schwerspatgrube is just one stop on the recommended, around 3.5 km long circular hiking trail that the community of Alheim has created together with the Ellenbach local history association. The hiking trail can be extended by an additional loop to the Großer See (Oberellenbach nature trail, 8 km).

Only recently, an entrance to the 130-year-old barite tunnel was uncovered and fitted with a grille door. This now provides a view into the mining tunnel of the Mathilde mine. Previously, there was only an opening accessible to bats. A nice addition to the mining trail.
