Römhild Labor Education Camp Memorial

Highlight • Historical Site

On the Großer Gleichberg in southern Thuringia, a former volcano, the Römhilder quarry was located from 1901 to 1968, of which the ruins of the crusher are still standing.
The Große Gleichberg is 679 meters above sea level. NN the higher of the two singular equal mountains east of Römhilds in the Grabfeld landscape in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia.
Basalt was mined in two quarries on the Großer Gleichberg, the Gleichamberger Steinbruch and the Römhilder Steinbruch.
There was a cable car with which the basalt was transported in Loren to the basalt works in Römhild at the station and to Gleichamberg.
The stones were used to build paved Chausseestrassen, then so-called artificial streets, and cobblestone streets, but also to build buildings.
Basalt from the quarries of the Großer Gleichberg can still be found on cobblestone streets all over Germany today.
During the time of National Socialism, from August 1943 to March 1945, there was a labor education camp in the Römhild quarry in which a maximum of about 400 "foreign nationals who were in breach of contract" were interned.
The prisoners had to work in the basalt quarry or in the basalt works at Römhild Bahnhof.
It must be assumed that at least 500 prisoners died in the camp or on the evacuation march in 1945.
During the Cold War, from 1968 to 1991, there was a restricted military area on the summit of the Großer Gleichberg with a radio and radar station of the Soviet armed forces, who left their autographs in the crushing plant.
In 1942, the Große Gleichberg was declared a nature reserve and is now a nature reserve.

Summit of Großer Gleichberg

Highlight • Summit

The climb up to the plateau is strenuous, but the view from above makes up for the effort. You can look towards Franconia (Bavaria) or towards Kleiner Gleichberg (Thuringia). This is where the viewpoints get their name from.

The "Gleichamberger Steinbruch" was in operation from 1897 to 1981.
In 1975 the basalt works were assigned to the combine STK (road and civil engineering
Combined) Suhl assigned.
One of the reasons for the permanent closure in 1981 was the fact
that since 1967/68 the Russian army claimed part of the summit plateau for radio surveillance.
The noise and dust during the blasting disrupted this activity. After the closure of the fracture
the Soviet Army took over the entire summit area.
It was a restricted military area until the Soviet troops withdrew in mid-1991.

The view is great, it stretches all the way to the Thuringian Forest. The boulder field of the Kleiner Gleichberg can be seen clearly.
You can find more pictures under the Thuringian View highlight.

Steinsburg Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

The Steinsburg Museum is a branch of the Thuringian Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Weimar. It presents the prehistory and early history of southern Thuringia, particularly that of the Gleichberg region, and thus offers fascinating insights into the economic and cultural life of the former Celtic settlement.

May 20, 2025,Wanderung auf den Großen Gleichberg 🕹️
After work, I quickly took a short hike up the Großer Gleichberg. Currently, the air is filled with the wonderful scent of lily of the valley and woodruff. The view toward Franconia is simply stunningly beautiful at this time of year. The Großer Gleichberg is also less crowded than its smaller neighbor.

Today we have been walking on the Großer Gleichberg for a long time - simply wonderful in spring.

Unfortunately, we don't have any high mountains ⛰️ in our area of Thuringia to train properly.
