Cathedral Square

Highlight • Historical Site

The Piazza del Duomo isn't just a square—it's considered one of the most beautiful Baroque squares in all of Italy, if not Europe.

The most fascinating thing about the cathedral itself (Cattedrale di Santa Maria delle Colonne) is that it was literally built around an ancient Greek temple.

The Temple of Athena: In the 5th century BC, a magnificent Doric temple stood here.

The Integration: As you walk along the side of the cathedral or enter, you'll see the massive, original Greek columns seamlessly integrated into the Christian church walls. This is living history spanning over 2,500 years.

The old town of Syracuse is really recommended. Very beautiful old buildings and small streets. Lots of small shops and restaurants. Especially what is a little away from the main roads is worthwhile. Finally, head to the Archimedes Museum.

FOOD TIP: The small and actually inconspicuous "Sapuri e amuri" almost at the end of the round in Via Luigi Greco Cassia 15 - very tasty, great value for money and a mega friendly service!

We let ourselves drift through Ortiga, the old town of Syracuse, which is located on an island off the coast of the city, discovering the sights, beauties and palaces of the city.

The small limestone island of Ortigia covers only about one square kilometer. Nevertheless, it is of immense historical significance and the historic center of the city of Syracuse. The entire island is a protected monument. We visited the cathedral together. Afterwards, we had free time to explore the island, with its narrow alleys and beaches, at our own pace.

Hey, Komootler, today we drove to Syracuse. Since we're fully stocked up, we chose the 24-hour parking lot at the harbor. A stroll through the old town gave us a first impression. Two large Aperol Spritz with Brucetta, olives, chips, peanuts and a sea view for €18 was amazingly good value. An interesting city with impressive Christmas lights, which we'll …
