Historic warehouse on the Lower Eider in Rendsburg

Highlight • Historical Site

In 1783, three packing houses were built at the same time:

at the Kiel-Holtenau lock

at the Rendsburg lock

in the port area of Tönning

The packing houses, which were similar in their construction, served as warehouses for storing and handling large quantities of goods such as wool, grain, coffee and salt. In addition, the functional buildings demonstrated the economic and political importance that the new waterway was to have for the entire state of Denmark.

All three buildings are made of bricks in a timber-frame construction with three full floors and a fully developed attic. The front of the buildings is interrupted by a central projection in which loading gates are located. The two packing houses in Holtenau and Tönning have comparable floor areas; the building in Tönning is 77.5 m long and 12.6 m wide, giving it a storage area of around 4,000 m².
The Rendsburg packing house has a floor space of 29.5 m × 12.6 m and is smaller than the other two buildings.

What the Lions Club Rendsburg planned in the spring of 1986 on the occasion of its 20th anniversary and then implemented with the approval of the city of Rendsburg is something to be proud of today. On the Untereider there is a magnificent little lion forest.
Under the leadership of Lions friend Christian von Buchwaldt - former forest director in the Barlohe state forest - a park-like planting was created on about 1.5 hectares near the swimming center on the Untereider. With the support of students and members of the Fockbek forest youth group, 120 large trees and 270 bushes were planted. 25 years ago, for example, the Lions Club actively supported Rendsburg's initiative to green and beautify the city.
When planning and selecting the plants in 1984, it was important that no closed forest was created, but rather a species-rich, light park with individual groups of trees. The combination of flowering trees such as acacia, wild fruit and willow trees - scattered with individual groups of bushes - should attract birds and insects: a new habitat for trees, bushes and animals. On April 7, 1984, the club handed over its "Lions Forest" to the city of Rendsburg and at the same time gave away many young tree plants to the citizens of the city. It should be green and blooming all over the gardens and on private property.

Gerhardsteich

Highlight • Lake

The Gerhardsteich in Rendsburg is an original part of the 1777-1784 built Eider Canal. When he was frozen in the winter, we used to play there on the ice as kids.
