If you're looking for a unique North Florida hiking experience that blends geological wonder with diverse ecosystems, the O'Leno State Park. – River Rise loop from O'Leno State Park is an excellent choice. This moderate hiking route covers 12.1 miles (19.5 km) with a gentle 134 feet (41 metres) of elevation gain, taking approximately 4 hours and 57 minutes to complete. It's ideal for hikers seeking a full day on the trail with plenty of natural intrigue, rather than a strenuous climb.
What to expect on O'Leno State Park. – River Rise loop from O'Leno State Park
This loop offers a fascinating journey through Florida's varied landscapes, from dense pine forests and flatwoods to hardwood hammocks and river swamps. The highlight is undoubtedly the Santa Fe River's disappearing act: you'll follow its path to the River Sink, where it vanishes underground, only to re-emerge three miles later at the picturesque River Rise. The trail itself can be quite sandy in sections, particularly towards River Rise Preserve, and may become wet or muddy during the rainy season, so be prepared for varying underfoot conditions. While the elevation gain is minimal, the distance makes it a good challenge for those ready for a longer day out, offering a peaceful escape into nature.
Planning your visit
O'Leno State Park is one of Florida's oldest state parks, and you'll find remnants of its Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) history, including a historic suspension bridge. However, note that as of May 2024, the suspension bridge was closed due to hurricane damage. The trail connects O'Leno with River Rise Preserve State Park, and some sections within River Rise are mixed-use with equestrians, so staying aware of your surroundings is key. A paper map is recommended for navigation due to the network of trails. Check park websites for any potential closures due to flooding, especially during the rainy season, and be aware of entrance fees for the state parks.
