Arrowhead Marsh Trail — Alameda

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Arrowhead Marsh trail is a section of the SF Bay trail with great birdwatching. It leads along a wetlands habitat made of tidal mud flats in Martin Luther King, Jr. Shoreline in Oakland, California. It is an important stop on the Pacific flyway and is habitat for important endangered species especially the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse.

Originally, the large slough, running through the salt marsh on the east side of San Leandro Bay and the major tributary creek were named East Creek. The marsh has now been filled for the construction of the Coliseum and the industrial areas to the north. The various creeks that flowed into the East Creek slough have been combined into two flood-control channels. On the north, Peralta, Courtland, and Seminary Creeks are combined into a channel bearing the name East Creek Slough. On the south, Lion and Arroyo Viejo Creeks flow into a channel called Damon Slough. The upland portion of the creek that had been called East Creek now is called Lion Creek and empties into Damon Slough (not East Creek Slough). explore.museumca.org/creeks/1200-OMEast.html

The High Street Bridge, built in 1939 as a PWA project, is a two lane bascule bridge (drawbridge) which spans the Oakland Estuary to Alameda island. The steel beams were manufactured by the Moore Dry Dock Company which also manufactured the beams for the Park Street Bridge. localwiki.org/oakland/High_Street_Bridge

Summit of Yerba Buena Island

Highlight • Summit

For a few years while the roads accessing the Treasure Island residential housing development are being rebuilt, this steep hill will be part of the only bike route connecting Treasure Island and its SF Muni bus & Ferry stop with the bike trail to the East Bay. At least it offers an elevated panoramic view of the island. Beware: due to construction activities the trail access may only be open on weekends!
