Mt. Lowe Observatory Ruins and View

Highlight • Historical Site

A series of disasters has eroded the properties in this area. In 1900, a kitchen fire destroyed the main house, and in 1905, another fire consumed the remaining structures. From 1909 to 1938, a combination of flooding, wind storms, and additional fires destroyed the rest. Here, you can now observe the ruins of the observatory and enjoy the beautiful view from this point.

Highlight • Summit

One of my favourite Places on Earth. Not only cause of the great View but also of so many possibilities to reach the Top of Mt.Lowe from the Sunset Ridge, Mt. Wilson (via Mt. Gabriel) or from Cobb Estate / Sam Merrill Trail via Echo Mountain. Really Love it!

Ye Alpine Tavern ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

This campground was once a glorified tavern being able to sleep 185 guests and included a ballroom, multiples stories, a kitchen, and dining hall. It was a stop along the Mt Lowe Electric Railway from 1895 until 1936. The tavern welcomed over three million visitors in its forty-one years of operation. Unfortunately, hard time and a fire brought it to an end and the remains were removed in 1959 by the U.S. Forest Service.

A site with spectacular views over Los Angeles County. Additionally, beneath the pavilion, you'll find various sighting tubes, each pointing to a different location, such as Redondo Beach, Catalina Island, Hollywood, etc.

Mount Lowe Railway Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

The summit of Echo Mountain has the ruins of what was a resort complex for the Mount Lowe Railway circa 1900. A cable car took visitors up from Pasadena below to this summit where a grand hotel and recreation facilities existed. The ultimate plan was for the Mount Lowe Railway to proceed to San Gabriel Mountain but in the early 1900's a fire destroyed the facility.

Echo Mountain Ruins and Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

Due to a series of disasters in the early 1900s, including fires, floods, and wind storms, this area was brought to ruin. Several remnants of that era, in the form of ruins, can still be found on the summit. Combined with the stunning views, this makes it a must-see in the area.
