View of St. Ottilien Abbey

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Erzabtei Sankt Ottilien (Latin Archiabbatia Ottiliensis) is a monastery of the missionary Benedictines in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech (near the Ammersee), which belongs to the diocese of Augsburg. Together with the surrounding buildings, the monastery forms the part of Sankt Ottilien (until 1904 Emming) of the Eresing municipality.

The archabbey is the main monastery of the Ottilian Congregation. It was founded in 1884 by the Swiss Andreas Amrhein. The entire monastery association includes 1,100 monks in 19 countries, of which around 110 live in St. Ottilien.

The pilgrimage to St. Ottilia in Emming has been proven since 1365. In the 16th century, Emming was expanded into a manor. The Ottilien chapel and a small castle were built. In the 17th century, the castle and chapel were baroque. The estate changed hands several times over the course of time; the castle was demolished in 1884. Finally, Andreas Amrhein, a Benedictine of the Beuron Archabbey, acquired the abandoned hamlet in 1886 and founded Sankt Ottilien in 1887.

Historical buildings, towers and gates – the city's 850-year history is omnipresent in Landsberg. The best way to discover the medieval streets and picturesque districts is on a guided city tour.

March 11, 2022,Wenn er schon fast vor der Haustüre liegt, der Ammersee, fahren wir halt mal hin!
On the way there, from Landsberg, the wind came from the north-east, i.e. headwind!
But he pushed us on the way back:"
