Pourville-sur-Mer

Highlight • Other

Pourville was a small fishing village until the 19th century. Then it gradually gained the status of "seaside resort". A casino and 2 large hotels were built on the coastline to receive the wealthy bathers from the capital. The village had its peak in the period between the two world wars. Only a few of the typical Belle Epoque houses have been preserved.
The promenade is about 500 meters long. On both sides there is a restaurant (Les régates en L'Huitrière), of course specializing in fish.
The most striking building is the chapel at the entrance of the village. In the old church many mixed marriages were concluded between Catholics and Protestants, something that was forbidden in nearby Dieppe. The chapel's stained glass windows date back to the 20th century and depict the crucifixion of Christ. Near the chapel is a memorial in honor of the Canadian soldiers who died in Operation Jubilee on August 19, 1942. Pourville was one of the four landing sites at the time, but the attack was quickly repulsed by the German army.
Pourville is also proud of the many famous people who stayed there: Louise Grimaldi (the eldest daughter of the Prince of Monaco), Jacques de Molay (Grand Master of the Templars) and Thomas Becket (Archbishop of Canterburry). The most famous, however, was Claude Monet, who stayed at the Casino Hotel of Pourville in 1882. He painted some 103 works in Pourville and Varengeville, often with the same themes but at different times of the day. In 1904 Claude Debussy completed his composition "La Mer". Other names you will find there are Suzanne Lenglen (the French tennis champion), Louis Aragon and Marcel Proust.
