Burgberg Village Square and Miners' Sculptures

Highlight • Monument

In the late Middle Ages, near Burgberg, at the foot of the Grünten, ore was mined from the nummulite limestone. Here are some work situations.

Sonthofen town centre

Highlight • Settlement

Sonthofen has committed itself to becoming a bicycle city. That makes sense: more cycling means fewer cars in the city and that, as everyone knows, increases the quality of life. Anyway, around Sonthofen you can drive super road bike. Lots of quiet streets embedded in the beautiful foothills of the Allgäu - it can hardly get much better. No wonder that the big tour transalp regularly celebrates its Grand Depart here.

Around 1525, at the time of the Peasants' War, the Reformation movement spread for the first time in the Upper Allgäu - and silted up again. A second attempt was made by the Protestant princes of the Schmalkaldic League after military successes in the summer of 1546, but it ended shortly thereafter imperial troops conquered the Allgäu. Not until the middle of the 19th century brought industrialization and Bavarian civil servants policy permanently Protestant Christians in the Allgäu. They were subordinated from 1858 to the royal Protestant parish Kempten.

By 1894 Sonthofen counted 109 Protestant and two particularly active were concerned with the establishment of religious services. It was not that easy, because services had to be financed on their own, and there were many formalities before they could get approval. Nevertheless, the first took place on 25.12.1897 in a town hall hall. From 1908 could not be used and you had to move with the services in the kindergarten. The cumbersome opening and closing of each celebration brought momentum into the blueprints. In 1909, the community acquired three areas in front of the city. In 1912 the church was finished. The neo-baroque church offered 160 seats for 250 parishioners and its secluded location reflected something of the outsider role of the evangelicals. Because despite all friendliness and support, the population by no means accepted another denomination so easily. There was anger about the land sales and just for the inauguration let the new district attendant to see that he did not like the Protestants in his county.

The Second World War survived the Täufer-Johannis Church externally almost unscathed, unlike the completely destroyed Sonthofen, but internally the years had worn. It was hard for the community after the war to deal with the renewed change in their environment. Even in the last weeks of the war, uniformed students from the Order's castle had attended the service. Many wanderers wanted to catch up on missed baptisms and church weddings and asked for readmission. In addition, there were countless refugees and displaced persons. The number of evangelicals rose from about 800 (1939) to 3650 in 1949 and made an expansion of the church necessary. It took place in 1960 and because architect Molitor from Kempten with approximately 150 location soldiers additionally counted, he created 500 seats.
