The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir is Central Park's largest body of water, spanning 106 acres between 86th and 96th Streets. It is a popular spot for joggers and walkers due to the 1.58-mile track around the reservoir with scenic views over the water to the skyline. It is also a popular site for birdwatching and is surrounded by blooming cherry trees and rhododendrons in spring, with the east side known as Rhododendron Mile. The reservoir was built between 1858 and 1862 and was once the world’s largest man-made water body. In 1994 it was renamed for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, a former jogger here.

Imagine Mosaic, Strawberry Fields

Highlight • Monument

At the 72nd Street, on the western side of Central Park, you will find the Strawberry Fields, where the John Lennon followers of the Imagine mosaic meet to sing. The monument is located near the Dakota Building, before John Lennon fell victim to an assassination attempt on December 8, 1980. Incidentally, his wife still lives in the Dakota Building and regularly comes to the memorial to lay flowers there.

The Pool, Central Park

Highlight • Lake

Near the West 100th Street entrance to Central Park, the Pool is a tranquil, secluded-feeling water body in Central Park. Located on the West Side between 100th and 103rd Streets, it is great for a relaxing walk and picnicking, with some of the best fall foliage views in Central Park. Red maples, sweetgums, and willows line the shoreline, and the area is great for birdwatching due to its proximity to the northern woodlands. The Pool is part of a series of landscapes connected by water. At its eastern edge, water flows under a rustic bridge and cascades down a 20-foot waterfall, and becomes the Loch, a stream that winds through the Ravine and into the Harlem Meer.

Description

If you're looking to truly escape the city without leaving it, The Ramble, Central Park – The Pool, Central Park loop from 96th Street is a fantastic hiking route. This moderate 11.0-mile (17.7 km) journey packs in 339 feet (103 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 4 hours and 34 minutes to complete. It's perfect for those who want to see Central Park's wilder side and experience its diverse landscapes, offering a comprehensive view of the park's ecosystems.

What to expect on The Ramble, Central Park – The Pool, Central Park loop from 96th Street

The route takes you through vastly different worlds within the park. You'll start by exploring The Ramble, a 36-acre "wild garden" with winding dirt paths, rustic bridges, and the meandering Gill stream. It's easy to get happily lost here amidst the dense plantings and rock outcroppings, a true birdwatching paradise. As you head north towards The Pool, the terrain shifts, eventually leading you into the rugged North Woods. Here, you'll find mulch-covered paths, hidden waterfalls, and the serene Loch, offering a more rigorous hiking experience with steep inclines and natural springs. This trail is best for hikers who appreciate varied landscapes and don't mind a good workout, especially if you're keen to discover Central Park's less-trodden, wilder corners.

Planning your visit

Starting from 96th Street, this loop offers excellent public transport access, making it easy to reach without a car. While Central Park is always accessible, visiting during the shoulder seasons like spring or fall can offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage, especially around The Pool and North Woods. Always carry enough water, even for a city hike, and wear appropriate footwear for varied terrain, as some sections are unpaved and can be hilly.
