Tourmalet Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Col du Tourmalet is one of the most legendary in the Pyrenees and the Tour de France. It is the pass that has been used most often in the history of the Tour since its first time in 1910. Culminating at 2,115 meters above sea level, it is also one of the highest. It is reached from Luz-Saint-Sauveur via 19 kilometers at 7.4% or from Sainte-Marie-de-Campan over 17.2 kilometers at 7.37% on average.

This is the statue of Octave Lapize, who shouted "murderers" but who was the first runner to reach the top in 1910 after walking most of the ascent.

The first kilometers of the ascent towards Luz-Ardiden pass through several small hamlets. Each of them offers a beautiful view of the town of Luz-Saint-Sauveur below as well as its valley.

Luz-Saint-Sauveur is a lively and welcoming town in the French Pyrenees. Its strategic location makes it a key crossing point to reach several valleys. Particularly welcoming, the town has no shortage of accommodation and dining options.

The western ascent to the Col du Tourmalet is the more scenic and the harder. Approximately 18 km (11 miles) covers 1,400 meters (1,400 ft) of elevation gain. In the lower section, the pass has a steady and easy gradient in the high single digits. After the village of Berges, there are a few double-digit climbs, after which the gradient returns to a steady gradient. Only at km (16 miles) do the switchbacks begin, and thus the steepest section, which reaches a maximum gradient of 14%. Then the monument is already in sight, and the col is in sight.

Exactly one year later we climbed this Pyrenean colossus again, I had almost forgotten how hard it was 😅 19 km at 7.5% and the last one being the hardest to finish one off 😂 ... 1:40 more than last year... I'm still not in shape 🙈
