View of Wartburg Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Wartburg towers as a landmark high above the city of Eisenach - 1000 years of German history are reflected in it again. Especially well known is the fact that the castle granted exile to the outlaw Martin Luther, who translated the New Testament here. From here, the view of the castle is rather distant but no less beautiful. But a few kilometers it is still to Eisenach.

Nice view of the Wartburg. Two small benches invite you to rest.

The Dragon Gorge is always great. In winter with the loud rushing water and from spring onwards it is incredibly green.

However, it is also very busy at weekends, so if possible, choose a weekday to visit.

Oberer Knöpfelsteich Picnic Area

Highlight • Rest Area

Here at the upper Knöpfelsteich there is a covered bench with a view of the pond. From there you can watch the many fish swimming around in the pond. Sometimes ducks come by and check to see if you have lost a few crumbs 😀

Dragon Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

We started early and had the gorge almost to ourselves. An absolute highlight, and not just for children - high rocks, water and plants create a unique backdrop.

Coming from Mariental, the small waterfall is located at the beginning of the gorge on the right of the path.

May 27, 2023,Mega Runde für Kinder Elfengrotte – Drachenschlucht
Hello, my dears. I was here in the Drachenschlucht for the first time today with my son. Please don't be alarmed by the full parking lot. It really got lost. However, if you need a lot of rest, it is better to go in the morning.

I've always wanted to go here. The Dragon Gorge. It runs about 2.5 km and 200 meters up and down. The mossy rocks are really beautiful to look at. The only problems are the tight spaces with oncoming traffic and the wooden stairs are slippery in wet weather. The gorge is also very well visited. The detour to the elf …

This very well-developed gorge is guaranteed to keep you entertained. You can start at the top of the parking lot, explore the gorge downhill, and return via a path parallel to the road (B19). Wartburg Castle is also not far away; we'll check it out next time.

A nice hike through the Drachenschlucht near Eisenach. It is absolutely worth it and even costs no admission. And where we were already in the vicinity, the path later also led up to the Wartburg.

We decided on the easier option and took the bus up and then walked down.
