Founded as a Cistercian abbey by Maulbronn monks in the picturesque Jagst valley in 1157, the monastery has developed into a powerful and flourishing monastery complex over the centuries. Schöntal Monastery impresses today with its monumental appearance and the variety of buildings from the Middle Ages to the Baroque. The monastery owes its imposing baroque appearance above all to Abbot Benedikt Knittel (1650-1732).
