The gardens and extended parkland at Sizergh Castle are wonderful to explore. There is a mirror lake, herbaceous borders, a working kitchen garden, apple orchard and limestone rock garden.
The National Trust castle, cafe and shop are also onsite.
NT members are free, non-members must pay to enter the garden and castle.

Set amongst stunning landscaped gardens, Sizergh Castle transports you back in time. The Strickland family has lived in the beautiful medieval house for over 750 years. Family portraits and possessions in the house tell the interesting tale of the family. Dating back to the 14th century, the house is one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture.

The house and gardens are managed by the National Trust. You can visit from 10am - 4pm daily. Tickets for adults cost £4. More information: nationaltrust.org.uk/sizergh#Overview

St John's Chapel of Ease, Helsington

Helsington Church is well known to walkers not so much for its interior (or exterior) but for its location and the unparalleled views of the Lake District fells to be enjoyed from its front gate. The ground to the west slopes down sharply into the Lyth valley, to offer an unobstructed sight of everything from the Kent estuary in Morecambe Bay across to Black Combe in the far west to the Coniston range, Scafell, the Langdales and the peaks beyond Grasmere in the north-west. Amazing!
