The mountain village Steinbach

The town with its approximately I450 inhabitants was first mentioned in documents in 1330. In 16./18. Century belonged Steinbach to the office and court Altenstein, the considerable mane of the "dogs of Wenkheim.
Surrounded by up to 700 m high mountains, Steinbach is embedded in two valleys, the Luther and the Schleifkotengrund.
This location favors an exceptionally mild climate and offers the best opportunities for tourists and hikers as well as winter sports enthusiasts.
Worth seeing and interesting are the baroque church with the mountain cemetery, the lovingly furnished local museum, the traditional craft of knife making, the winter sports facilities in Schleitkotengrund and the Luther memorial, place of the fake capture of the reformer in 1521. Here is a small teahouse after the Chinese model on the mountain trail in the park Altenstein. It stands on a ridge, from which you can enjoy a great view of the park and the towns of Schweina and Bad Liebenstein.

Altenstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Altenstein Castle was built in 1736 as a residential castle on the foundations of the worn-out Altenstein Castle for the dukes of Meiningen. After numerous changes of ownership it served at the time of the GDR as Handwerkererholungsheim. It was included in the list of monuments in the 1970s and should be opened to visitors along with the garden. In 1982, the work resulted in a catastrophic fire in which the castle burned to the ground. Even before the turnaround began with improper renovations, which quickly came to a halt. After a long construction break, the castle has been renovated since 2010 and is to be restored to its original state. From the outside you can already visit the magnificent building and stroll through the extensive park.
