Aalversupers Brunnen - The eel waterer

The story of the eel super

Fockbek's legend is about Aalversupen (Low German for eel drowning or eel drowning). According to the story, the villagers wanted to breed herrings in Lake Fockbek, for which they poured salted herrings they had bought at the Rendsburg market into the lake. The following year, when they drained the lake water to reap the fruits of their efforts, they found not a single herring left, only an eel lounging in the mud. The Fockbekers concluded that this eel had eaten all the herrings. In the course of deliberations about the cruelest possible punishment for the "malefactor", a villager who had once almost drowned advocated drowning the eel (Low German: versupen). No sooner said than done: As soon as the lake was filled again, the eel was thrown into the water at the deepest point. As he struggled in the water, the people of Fockbek commented: "Look at how he's struggling!" and "He's drowning! He's drowning!"; in Low German: "He versupt! He versupt!", hence "De Aalversuper". To remember the spot where they drowned the eel, they made a notch on the corresponding side of the boat. This mocking story was allegedly invented by the residents of the neighboring town of Rendsburg and was intended to reflect the simplicity of the residents of the neighboring western village. Ultimately, the cause was disputes over fishing rights.

The canal's "Street of Dream Ships", as the canal is also called, has many attractions worth experiencing. It's not just the ships like small sailors, big yachts, freighters and containers, cruisers and luxury liners that make it so interesting. The Kiel Canal, the world's busiest artificial shipping route, has much more to offer visitors on its almost 100 kilometers from Brunsbüttel to Kiel. Walkers, walkers, joggers, cyclists and hikers love its canal side paths, which are ideal for relaxing alongside international shipping. Impressive bridge structures provide wonderful views over the wide canal region. Cozy restaurants and cafés with a view of the canal invite you to stop off, rest and strengthen yourself.

Old Pilot Station Nübbel

Highlight • Historical Site

The Nübbel Pilot Station is a group of buildings on the Kiel Canal near Rendsburg. It was built in several sections between 1895 and 1962 and served as accommodation for pilots on the Kiel Canal. It remained in this capacity until the new Rüsterbergen Pilot Station was commissioned in 1995. The old station stood empty for several years and was in danger of falling into disrepair. It was then taken over by a private investor and converted into condominiums. It is now a listed building. The station's location, roughly in the middle of the Kiel Canal, results from the division of the Kiel Canal into an eastern and a western section. Ships transiting the entire length of the canal change pilots along the way.
