From the 13th to the 18th century, the cities used their own measurements.

Iron sample length measures were displayed publicly to inform merchants.

The Duderstadt ell was the equivalent of 58.2 cm.

Duderstadt Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The Duderstadt town hall is one of the most beautiful and oldest in Germany. The building history goes back to 1302. The town hall served merchants as a marketplace and was the center of civic life.
Today it is a cultural center, meeting place and place of education. The visitor can go on a journey of discovery from the cellar vault up to the tower.
The Anreischke shows itself every two hours from the window of the town hall tower, combined with the carillon "My Duderstadt am Brehmestrand".

Half-timbered houses in Duderstadt

Highlight • Historical Site

Hundreds of half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and ramparts: With its complete medieval townscape, a visit to Duderstadt in Southern Lower Saxony is also a trip into the past.

More than 600 half-timbered houses from different centuries shape the historic center of the small town in southeastern Lower Saxony. As many are listed buildings, they are carefully maintained. Only a few towns still have such a complete medieval townscape. Alleys and streets in Duderstadt run through the rows of houses virtually unchanged to this day.

Marksmen's Fountain

Highlight • Monument

The Schützenbrunnen is located on the upper Marktstraße in front of the basilica and the Tabalugahaus. The fountain, built in 1997, is a gift from the Duderstadt rifle club to the city of Duderstadt. This is also indicated by the inscription around the edge of the base: "929 - city and Schützen firmly connected - an ever strong bond - 1302".
The artistic design for this comes from the sculptor Rudi Pabel from Kaiserslautern.

Hesse House (Tabaluga House), Duderstadt

Highlight • Historical Site

The Tabalugahaus
The Peter Maffay Foundation has been providing disadvantaged children and young people with active stays in nature for several years. Prof. Hans Georg Näder, who grew up in Duderstadt and is the owner of the Ottobock group of companies, had long had the desire to support children "who did not grow up as sheltered" as he did. It developed from this intention and friendship with Peter Maffay Project "shelters for children" in Duderstadt. The resulting Tabalugahaus is a place where children and adolescents can regain their strength in an intact community and relax from their stressful everyday life.
Everything else, like this information, can be found on the homepage of the project tabalugahaus.de.

March 16, 2025,Wall-Runde & Westerturm DUD 😍👌
Since we didn't manage to visit the Westerturm yesterday, despite its absolutely fascinating construction, we quickly circled the beautiful half-timbered town center on the surrounding ramparts today. 🤗
The tower and exhibition lived up to their promise. 🤩👌

Today we went to Duderstadt for the apple and pear market.

First, we walked along Bahnhofstrasse toward the city center.

From or around St. Servatius Church to St. Cyriacus Basilica were the market stalls and open shops.

There was much to see, discover, and try.

The town hall, the pillory, and the Marian column are very beautiful to look at.

This evening we took a walk along the green wall that surrounds the old town. There are always beautiful views of the city or the surrounding area, a very nice walk around the city 😊
