The village of Arholzen, on the northern edge of the Solling valley, was first mentioned in 1010 and, after medieval desertification, was systematically resettled in 1555.

Like large parts of the Weser Uplands, the area around Arholzen is heavily influenced by the Red Bunter sandstone, which has been mined here for centuries.
