Wisteria Flowers on Stone Wall

This was in May after lots of rain, it obviously stood out while I enjoyed my Scotch Egg snack. The ideal food for long bike rides.

Pant-y-Goitre Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

This is a pretty Grade II-listed bridge across the River Usk. Its three arches are constructed of red sandstone, the central of which is larger. Three circular tunnels cut through the structure between the arches, acting as a defence against flooding, which the Usk has a history of.

The bridge was built in 1821 for the road between Abergavenny and Usk. The neighbouring settlement of Llanvihangel Gobion is a quiet little village.

Usk Bridge

Highlight • River

The charming town of Usk, on the banks of its namesake river, is a delightful place to visit. The early 12th-century Usk Castle is worth a visit, while the town’s floral displays are legendary — it has won the Wales in Bloom competition 37 times in a row!

It is an important stop on the 48-mile (77 km) Usk Valley Walk between Caerleon and Brecon. There are a number of inns and guesthouses in the town, as well as places to eat and drink.

Usk Bridge

Highlight • Monument

The old red sandstone bridge was built between 1746 and 1747. It has five arches and was widened in 1836-7, although it might not feel like it if traffic is busy! If you opt for the footpath, please dismount.
