Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, Gandino

Highlight • Religious Site

This basilica, built on a structure dating back to the 12th century and gradually expanded over the centuries, reached its final structure in the 16th/17th centuries.
It is considered one of the most interesting churches in the entire diocese, rivaling the cathedral and the city's basilicas in richness and beauty.
It contains numerous works of art, from Lombard, Italian, and Central European artists.
With three naves, divided by four imposing polylobed pillars, it features splendid Baroque frescoed vaults, capable of astonishing and captivating not only the faithful but also the lay visitor.
The large hexagonal bell tower, with its unique and distinctive onion dome, completes its structure.
It is worth taking the time for a prolonged and attentive visit.

The Ancient Conduct of the Concossola Valley was once vital for the factories in the valley floor and a unique seaside resort for the boys of the immediate post-war period. Water was a primary and indispensable element for the many textile industries located along the Romna stream and the Concossola Valley. The water supply was ensured by an ancient conduit, an uncommon engineering feat with architectural solutions to be enhanced. The recent restoration work has restored bridges and canals, creating an educational trail, but also a suggestive itinerary for hikers, highlighting the potential of an area that also includes the Corrado lake, the ancient springs, the Busa Valley, agricultural and agritourism businesses and the ancient Scarlatti dyeing factory where the uniforms of Garibaldi's Thousand were dyed. Thanks to the reclamation work, the ancient bridge-canal on the Concossola canal has been brought to light, well indicated in the ancient design tables drawn up in 1889 by the engineer. Giuseppe Crespi and in the 1965 surveys by the engineers Luigi and Mario De Beni of Bergamo. The route extends for about 650 meters, one-way, starting from the Concossola spring and also crossing the Valley that descends from Campo d’Avene. Visitors will walk on a galvanized grid with a relative protective barrier and, for some stretches, directly inside the conduit.
