Alcolea, in the Alpujarra of Almería and at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, is a good base for strolling among olive and almond trees and along the course of the Alcolea River, a tributary of the Grande de Adra. In the town and its districts (Darrícal and Lucainena), you can see the Mudejar church of San Sebastián, historic chapels, and defensive remains such as the Old Castle and the Escarientes Fortress. The narrow streets and viewpoints offer sweeping views of the nearby mountains and an authentic mountain atmosphere. It's hot in summer: bring water, sunscreen, and firm-soled shoes for stony sections and uneven trails.
