Plaza de Santo Domingo Fountain, León

Highlight • Monument

The Plaza de Santo Domingo is the heart of the city, a wide roundabout around which the social, commercial and historical life of León revolves. Emerged in 1904 during the expansion process, better known as the expansion, it became a strategic point to unite the Old Town with the modern part of the city.

EL LEÓN DE SALEAL:
We go back to Roman times to understand part of the theme of this sculpture. Cloacina, in Roman mythology, was the goddess who ruled over the Cloaca Máxima, the sewer system of Rome. The sewer name comes from the name of this goddess, because thanks to the origin of sewer systems, a quality of life was achieved in terms of sanitation of urban environments and public health from the beginning to the present day.
It should be remembered that the origin of the name of this city and province of León comes from the word legio ("legion"). Legio VII Gemina was the Roman camp that settled here and with it the origin of the city of León.
A lion with strength and claws as a symbol of the sanitation system (the modern version of Cloacina Máxima) in constant renewal and maintenance.
The goal was achieved: to do something symbolic and reflect the efforts and human work of so many years, to give solidity to our public health and the health of the environment.

Romanesque Church of San Isidoro

Highlight • Religious Site

In the nave by the altar, the relics of St. Isidore are kept in the silver shrine. Definitely worth seeing in the oldest Romanesque part of the church is the museum and the Romanesque frescoes in the Pantheon (royal crypt). Via audio guides in all important languages (unfortunately only with mobile data on your phone) you can learn a lot about Isidore and the Infanta, later Empress Sancha.

León Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Without a doubt, the Cathedral is the emblem of the city and its history begins in the 10th century. On top of the old baths and public buildings that the Legio VII had built in the middle of the 2nd century, stood the royal palace of Ordoño II. In 917, after defeating the Arabs in the battle of San Esteban de Gormaz, the king gave up his residence "gratefully to God" so that the first cathedral temple was erected there.

Today there was still time for a walk through the old town of Leon and through the cathedral.

I can only recommend everyone to see the cathedral

Leòn is a beautiful city and it is definitely worth staying there longer. Unfortunately the cathedral was closed because weddings were taking place. Following a tip from a Camino friend: go to Spanish bakeries and ask about their speciality, I did it and I have to say it was super delicious, it is definitely worth asking 👌
