Saint Hedwig Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The first mentions of the church date back to around 1428.

The current church was built in the years 1460–1468. In 1592, a tower was added, and in the 16th century, a chapel by the presbytery. The church was renovated several times, including at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, the chapel by the presbytery was vaulted. Further chapels were added to the nave: in 1637, St. John the Baptist's from the north, and in 1705, the Blessed Virgin Mary's from the south. After 1721, the church tower was renovated, funded by the castellan of Brzeskokujaw.

The church underwent a thorough renovation in the years 1951–1955, including the removal of the apparent vault of the nave from the 17th century and the roof truss, and the installation of a reinforced concrete-hollow ceiling.

Nieszawa Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

The first mention of Nieszawa comes from 1230, when Konrad I of Masovia donated the town to the Teutonic Order. But then Nieszawa was located in a place that is today called Mała Nieszawka and is located a few kilometers west of Toruń.
It was in this place that, for the first time on Polish soil, seven Teutonic knights under the command of the later national master, Herman von Balk, settled on the Vistula River. This stronghold was the seat of the southernmost commandry of the Teutonic State. Around 1300, the Teutonic Knights built a fortified castle there, which was demolished in 1424. As a result of the turbulent history of history, in just over 200 years Nieszawa changed its location twice, moving almost 40 km up the Vistula to the place where it is currently located.
