The car park, managed by the National Trust, is well-placed to start an adventure. There is information about the area and local walks on the notice boards.

The Mendip Way is a super 50 mile (80 km) long-distance footpath that takes in the beautiful scenic qualities of the gentle Mendip Hills. Nearby is beautiful Ebbor Wood and Ebbor Gorge, which forms part of the West Mendip Way. The West Mendip Way as a whole traverses the entire central Mendip Plateau. The scenery is gorgeous, and not far away is famous Wokey Hole village, with its equally famous cave.

Standing in the centre of Priddy village green, this thatched stack of hurdles holds an important place in the history of the village. Local saying has it that if the hurdles did not remain in place from one sheep fair until the next, the lord of the manor could refuse the villagers' right to hold the annual fair, an event that has taken place since 1348.

Draycott Sleights Nature Reserve is managed by Somerset Wildlife Trust. A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) high on the southern slopes of the Mendip Hills, this place enjoys commanding views towards Exmoor in the west and, to the north, across the Bristol Channel to South Wales. At ground level, some 200 species of plants have been spotted and recorded on this steep stretch of grassland. They include more than 40 rare species.

‘Sleight’ is an old Somerset word for sheep pasture and grazing here continues as it has for hundreds of years so please keep dogs under control and on a lead. This species-rich limestone grassland is very fragile and the reserve has been carefully managed by the Trust since it bought the 100-acre (40 ha) site in 1986.

This special nature reserve is alive with butterflies and other wildlife throughout the year.

March 9, 2022,UK West Mendip Way Cheddar to Wells and on to Dulcote

Another leg of the Mendip Way completed. Last one tomorrow. Chilly but wonderful views from up high. Also went back to the cafe in Wells to pay for the coffee I forgot to pay for yesterday!
